From Creativity to Empowerment: Discovering Strength and New Beginnings in Kibisi

Young women involved in arts

Sometimes, transformation begins with something as simple as a piece of cardboard, a handful of rosemary or materials that others might have thrown away.

In Kibisi, in the Eldoret region of Kenya, 30 young mothers came together for a day of creativity, reflection and empowerment. Through different artistic activities, they explored themes of strength, resilience, healing and new beginnings.

The creative session offered space to express ideas, discover individual strengths and create something meaningful together.

Three creative activities brought these ideas to life:

  • The Power Tower: Built from cardboard, this collaborative artwork became a symbol of resilience, strength and the ability to build something new, even when resources are limited.
  • Frottage collages with rosemary: Using the textures of rosemary leaves, participants created individual collages that reflected themes of healing, mindfulness and personal strength.
  • Upcycled sculptures: Everyday discarded materials were transformed into colourful and expressive artworks – demonstrating how something seemingly without value can become something beautiful and purposeful.

Creativity that stays and inspires

The artworks are now displayed at Kibisi Garden NGO, in the sewing workshop, office and cafeteria. They have become part of the everyday environment, serving as lasting reminders of the creativity, determination and potential of the women who made them.

More than just artistic outcomes, these creations carry a powerful message: difficult circumstances do not define a person’s potential. With opportunities, encouragement and the space to express themselves, people can discover new perspectives and possibilities.

For young mothers facing multiple challenges, such experiences can be particularly meaningful. They create opportunities to connect, build confidence, recognise personal strengths and experience the value of collective action.

Empowerment through participation

At SCN Kenya, we believe that stronger communities are built by recognising and nurturing the potential of the people within them. Empowerment is not something delivered to people; it grows when people have the opportunity to participate, create, contribute and shape their own stories.

Exhibition walk

A heartfelt thank you to all 30 participants for their creativity, courage and openness. And thank you to everyone at Kibisi Garden NGO who helped make this day possible.

Because sometimes the first step towards a new beginning is discovering what we are capable of creating together.
