Impressions and voices from a visit to our latest SCN Kenya member in Mukuru slums, Nairobi

Yesterday, together with a colleague and some supporters from India and UK we visited VICCO, a young social and social entrepreneurial organisation in the middle of Mukuru slums in Nairobi.

This voucher helps pregnant women in need to buy nutrious food in our MMH shop

Shakur, the leader of VICCO. And his team are supported by the Making More Health initiative from Boehringer Ingelheim. Recently he joined also our national wide system changer network of local NGO partners where a lot of social entrepreneurial ideas and learnings of individual organizations are shared. Did you know that we measure their exchange and see a huge commitment as the impact on the communities is a much better one when they get several solutions in parallel?

Anyhow, VICCO helps children and pregnant women with food and health programs and offers shelter for women and children who cannot go back to their homes because of domestic violence. Children get at least one meal per day and have a place where they can study, play and participate in many activities, such as cooking and farming classes…. A lot of men from the community are engaging in urban farming in the MMH garden, a small paradise in a very discouraging surrounding. As the men said: “It is for us also a place where we can relax, talk to each other, share our daily challenges.”

During our stay my colleague did also a basic training on food safety and infection prevention.

Here are a few impressions and voices:

We participated also in the distribution of vegetables that VICCO gets every week from a local supermarket.
