A visit from India at our Kenyan women self- help groups

As many of you may know I work together with local NGO partners in India and Kenya to better the life of vulnerable communities. One essential part of this work is not just to invest in various projects and activities, but we invest also a lot in network building among our partners, even across the continents.

This time, two of our core partners in India have come for a week to join our Making More Health Kenyan project visits and to see, exchange and learn from the various activities in our Kenyan Making More Health locations. In addition, they bring also some successful hygiene games training materials from India to our Kenyan Making More Health hubs and train our Kenyan partners. Our local NGO partners from our MNH hub India (KKID) visit our local NGO partner (Solasa) who is working in the slums in Eldoret.

After a visit at our MMH self-help groups in Langas slums and a visit to our center, Selvaraj and Shibu trained a team of 13 staff members from Solasa on eight several hygiene games for children and young adults. These games are used successfully in more than by 50 Indian schools to teach about the usage of toilets and hand washing.

“These games are really useful and we will do them with the parents in our parents center, our children and self help groups,” says Elizabeth, who leads Solasa. On obviously all had a lot of fun together while learning the games and sharing about the work and different projects. Discussions on kitchen garden practices, challenges with self- help groups, understanding the different cultures and most of all building a good relationship between the partners were also part of the outcome of this meeting. “

We have exchanged our email addresses and will follow up on the games”, said Selvaraj and Elizabeth added: “These game practices can be adapted easily to more topics, too. Let’s see how we can put it in practice and share back then with our new friends in India.”

The exchange of skills and experiences, innovative ideas and better solutions through different partners is one essential puzzle piece in the big picture. In this way, we are able to tackle the community needs much more holistically and sustainably.
