From Mukuru to Western Kenya: How Tendo Is Scaling Community Solutions

Tendo, one of the System Changer Network Kenya NGO partners

Tendo – one of our System Changer Network Kenya Core NGOs – began its journey in the heart of the Mukuru slums in Nairobi. While still establishing itself, the team focused on empowering vulnerable communities through soap and detergent production, achieving certification from the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) early on.
This gave the local people a real chance to create income with quality-assured products.

This year, Tendo is scaling this impact.

Tendo helps with organic farming and hygiene. He empowers micro business locally

In Western Kenya, close to Kendubay, the new Tendo Center has opened its doors — a hub where the organisation now combines:

  • Organic farming training to strengthen food security and climate-resilient livelihoods
  • Continued soap and detergent manufacturing to generate income for local families
  • Community engagement that builds long-term, locally driven solutions

Tendo’s journey reflects what the System Changer Network Kenya stands for: practical innovation that grows into regional transformation. Financial sustainability. Systemic change.
Their work shows how local leadership, hands-on skills, and collaborative support can build sustainable pathways out of poverty.
