A Circle of Care: Building Inclusive Communities in Webuye, Kenya

People with albinism help elderly. Street boys help people with albinism and support the NGO center

In Webuye, Western Kenya, our partner NGO center GAASPP works with street boys, teenage mothers, people with albinism, and elderly people over 90 years old — creating a living example of inclusion, shared responsibility, and sustainable social change.

The community model integrates care, learning, and empowerment in a way that connects generations and strengthens resilience:

• People with albinism care for the babies of our teenage mothers in the mornings and provide daily support to elderly residents.
• Teenage mothers are able to return to school and acquire new income-generating skills, laying the foundation for long-term independence.
• Street boys receive academic and vocational training; some contribute to the operations of the Olukulo Guesthouse, which helps finance the center’s ongoing activities.
• Both the young women and the young men participate in supporting the elderly, creating an ecosystem of solidarity and mutual respect.

This approach demonstrates how community-led collaboration can transform vulnerability into collective strength — where every group contributes to and benefits from shared progress.
This is one example of how we understand Partnering as the catalyst of change in our
System Changer Network Kenya — Living SDG 17 in Practice

SCN Kenya plays a partnering role at all levels – as the catalyst of change

:
• At community level, by facilitating cooperation among local groups and empowering grassroots initiatives like the Webuye center.
• Across NGOs, through structured exchange frameworks that strengthen learning, collaboration, and collective impact.
• Across sectors and internationally, by linking community-driven organizations with companies, academic institutions, and development partners to co-create systemic solutions for lasting change.

By connecting local innovation with cross-sector partnerships, SCN Kenya transforms collaboration into a catalyst for resilience and sustainable impact.
