More Mental Well-being for young “acrobats” in Nairobi’s informal settlements

An outstanding, nearly cost- free, but very impactful and creative program for the mental well-being of children: acrobats lessons in Nairobi’s slum Mukuru Sinai.

One of our 8 NGO partners, VICCO, runs many diverse projects to support youth and women in one of Kenya’s largest slum areas: from urban farming and nutrition to health and hygiene, from young mother support to a Making More Health Shop as a social business…

A special focus is also on sports and creativity. Wall paintings on health and nutrition, a Making More Health youth knitting club – and the VICCO acrobats group.

Acrobats’ lessons as driver for empathy and mental well- being

The unique and very special Mental health Training happens every day in the late afternoon: two hours of acrobats training for more than 30 children between 5 and 14 years who meet in the middle of a slum area that is prepared with straw… the children learn from acrobats trainers not just amazing athletic skillst, but also team spirit and leadership skills, empathy and community engagement. A moment of mental health that for some of them changes the whole mindset and gives them a lot of self confidence.

Recently, I visited the group and got some very interesting insights about the impact of the acrobat lessons.

An interview with one of the acrobats’ trainers for children in informal settlements and the impact

Listen to the video/interview with one of the trainers!

Many of the young acrobats participate also in the knitting course and the Saturday cooking classes

By the way: we are looking for donations for buying some materials and shirts for the acrobats group. If you are interested to help, please contact.
