World Food Day – leave no one behind!

World Food day – our NGO partner in Nairobi

During the World Food today our local partner in Nairobi, the community based organisation VICCO in Mukuru slums led by Shakur Njeru, organized various activities. His organization supports underserved communities with urban farming in informal settlements, nutrition programs for children and elderly, women empowerment and shelter and a lot of programs for children and youth.

“We managed to raise a lot of awareness in Mukuru during world food day where we mobilized more than 1500 people. Among them, our community organized groups who sensitized about proper food handling. We also demonstrated cooking with 70 young mothers in our community kitchen. The assistant County commissioner also graced our event where he encouraged people to grow their own food and keep our water safe for more health.”

Many different activities took place to raise awareness about food topics

A way to get communities involved

A lot of people regularly participate and engage in several activities offered by VICCO – such as caring about the MMH garden, sharing knowledge about urban farming with other slum habitants, proper food handling, taking part in regular health cooking sessions for youth, mental well-being, preparation of morning food for children who otherwise would go to school without food… During world Food day they had prepared a very attractive program – with dance, acrobats, cycling and walks.

The SUN Civil Society Network brings together over 4,000 members in over 50 countries across the globe. As part of the Scaling Up Nutrition Movement , the SUN Civil Society Network (SUN CSN) is working to raise the voices of those who are affected by malnutrition. The primary purpose is to end malnutrition globally by 2030.

The role of MMH?

In the Making More Health Initiative VICCO is one of our 8 network partners in Kenya ( SCN system changer network) where we connect innovative solutions through social entrepreneurs, employees, local and international partners (companies, NGOs and universities): from farming to digital, from health to hygiene, from cultural awareness to mental well-being. In the SCN we build exchange structures on various levels, involve the communities themselves as ambassadors with the overall aim to support and empower needy communities in more holistic ways!
